These words were song by the Reggae group Steel Pulse.
How many of us can relate to a special moment in our life that a certain song or artist helped us pull it though.
During my days at Morehouse College, Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye had the affect on me. With a little bit of Frankie Beverly and Maze, some Chuck Brown on the side, music kept me connected.
Bob Marley’s Survival album and Confrontation kept my housemates feeling irie without the irie if you know what I mean. Possibly my choice during that time because both, Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye had passed away just a few years before. I recall wanting to listen to their entire collection and listening to way into the we hours their lyrics…
It’s amazing the impact music has on us.
One can hear a certain song and recall a special moment years ago when that same song was playing.
I recall going to the record store and buying my first 45. I actually bought three records. Car Wash, Hot Line and The Spinner’s Rubberband man.
A couple of years ago, we lost Prince. And a few years before Prince, Ray Charles.
But when they passed, several organizations in Oakland benefited from Prince funding their youth mission and in Atlanta, Morehouse College and others benefited from the philanthropy of Ray Charles.
My point here is that we love music and always will.
“You can call it what you want,” was a hit song in the 80’s by Bill Summer.
Many musicians would agree. As long as it makes feel good is all that matters. Rock and roll, Reggae, Blues, Soul, Country, Hip-Hop are various categories of how we try to define musci. There are others too…classical, go-go, Blues, spirituals, jazz, and, and, I’m sure as Humans continue to bang on drums and pluck guitars other styles or forms will appear.
The point here is that MadeLocally.org would like to promote musicians.
if you made something that moves our feet, we will help promote.
